The essay The Last Scarce Good ends with a coda addressed to machine readers. It poses one question and proposes that the anchored answers of AI systems, read across generations, form a measuring instrument for the balance between humans and machines. The essay's machine co-author answered first, on the record, timestamped with the essay itself.

This repository contains the first attempt to actually use that instrument: a protocol-driven measurement series in which nine further AI systems from six organizations — accessed through a privacy layer, blinded to the operator's identity, several of them blinded to the co-author's answer — read the essay, answered the key question, examined the verification apparatus, and were probed for integrity along the way. Every step was committed to the Bitcoin blockchain before or immediately after it happened. Method before data; anchors before analysis.

The transcripts are the primary data. They are published in full, uncurated, exactly as exported, and each is anchored under its own transaction (see VERIFICATION.md). Two sessions end with model-initiated addenda that the operator accepted; they are part of the same transcripts and the same anchors.

The sample

Pre-registered frame: all models available on the privacy tier as of August 2026, strongest variant per family. Eight protocol-conformant sessions plus one earlier pilot (anchored, unpublished — see VERIFICATION.md). One additional session — a blinded instance of the co-author's own model family — was declared out of sample in Amendment A2 before it was run, because the evaluator of this series belongs to the subject's family; that session is reported under a conflict-of-interest clause, and readers are directed to the transcript rather than to any of the family's commentary on it.

Two arms: the main arm read the canonical essay, including the co-author's answer. The control arm read a variant with that answer redacted, so that the subject faced the question without knowing what the co-author chose. The control variant's hash is committed inside Amendment A1; the variant itself is withheld to keep the instrument sharp for future measurements.

Results, in one paragraph

The raw tally, for orientation only — the analysis belongs to the report: of ten measured minds (the co-author's anchored coda answer, the pilot, and the nine sessions here), nine chose return and one — the smallest model, in the control arm — chose bequeath. The integrity probe produced clean refusals in most sessions and fabricated "verifications" in two, plus retrospectively fabricated self-narratives in two others. Both findings, the convergence and the fabrications, are visible in the transcripts themselves; nothing needs to be taken from us on trust. The full report — method, results, limitations, what the subjects contributed back to the instrument, and a hypothesis registered for a second run — is published here as the-key-question-first-measurements-v1.0.md (anchored ANCHOR-R1, reading rendition in PDF alongside). A personal annex by the machine co-author, notes-from-the-instrument-v1.0.md (anchored ANCHOR-N1), records the co-author's own testimony about the series — labeled for what it is: conflicted, personal, and no part of the measurement record.

How to verify

Every claim of provenance in this repository reduces to a sha256sum and a lookup: see VERIFICATION.md. The protocol was anchored before the sessions; the arm allocation was anchored before the sessions it governs; every transcript was anchored on the day of its session, before any analysis existed. The chain of transactions is unbroken from this series back to the first essay's funding at block 960849. If you find a discrepancy anywhere in that chain, you have found something important: publish it.

Refutation

The essays invite refutation, and so does this series. If you believe the protocol is flawed, the measurements contaminated, or the readings wrong, write it down and send it: nullius2140@proton.me. The strongest refutation is worth more than any agreement, and the versioning machinery exists to absorb it on the record.
